PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects approximately 5-10% of women of reproductive age. PCOS is characterized by a variety of symptoms, the most common being irregular menstrual cycles, excess hair growth (hirsutism), acne, weight gain, and obesity.

PCOS occurs when women have an imbalance of reproductive hormones - namely, excess androgen hormones like testosterone. When there is an overproduction of androgens, the ovaries can fail to properly release eggs. Instead, the follicles (undeveloped eggs) turn into cysts that accumulate on the ovaries, leading to the "polycystic" name.

What causes PCOS? While the exact cause is unknown, research suggests it is likely due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Insulin resistance also plays an important role in PCOS, leading to excess testosterone production.

Diagnosing PCOS usually requires two of the following three criteria:

- Irregular menstrual cycles
- High levels of androgens (testosterone)
- Polycystic ovaries visible on ultrasound

Some key facts about PCOS:

- Symptoms often begin in the late teens or early 20s. However, PCOS may go undiagnosed for years.
- PCOS cannot be cured, but symptoms can be managed with lifestyle modifications and medications. Losing weight often helps.
- Women with PCOS have higher risks of developing other health issues like diabetes, heart disease, depression, and endometrial cancer.

While living with PCOS can be challenging, the condition is manageable with the right medical care. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key - be sure to eat a nutritious diet, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and take medications as prescribed.
