Osteoporosis

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones that are more susceptible to fractures. It develops when bone loss occurs faster than new bone can form.

Osteoporosis can cause no symptoms for a long time. But over time, thinning and weakening of the bones leads to increased risk of fractures, especially in the hip, spine and wrist. Fractures from osteoporosis can result in pain, loss of height, stooped posture and decreased mobility.

Some key facts about osteoporosis:

- Who does it affect? Women are at higher risk, especially after menopause when estrogen levels drop. Men can get it too.

- What causes bone loss? As we age, existing bone breaks down faster than new bone forms. Lack of calcium, vitamin D, and exercise can speed up bone loss.

- How do you diagnose it? A bone density scan measures bone loss. Osteoporosis is diagnosed when bone density falls more than 2.5 standard deviations below peak bone mass.

- What are the risk factors? Older age, family history, smoking, excessive alcohol, low calcium intake, low testosterone levels, and certain medications like steroids.

- How is it treated? Recommended treatments include calcium and vitamin D supplements, prescription medications like bisphosphonates or denosumab to slow bone loss, and weight-bearing exercise.

The key to preventing and treating osteoporosis is building strong bones while you're young and taking steps to maintain bone strength as you age. A healthy diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D can help strengthen bones. Weight-bearing exercise is equally important to stimulate new bone growth.
